New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changes

New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changesYesterday, the FCC published details on a new Apple TV that appeared to be smaller than the current Apple TV third generation. This information led to widespread speculation that a new model of Apple TV was about to arrive with new features too. Unfortunately it appears that this is not the case, the dimensions will remain the same but the internal components will be subject to just minor changes. The Verge managed to get a statement from Apple to explain the confusion.

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don't affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.

It had been rumored that the internal component change could be the addition of the A5x processor; before we will know if this is the case, we will have to wait for someone to crack one open and take a look inside as Apple is not giving out any more details. Either way, the experience and look of this updated Apple TV will be exactly the same as it was before.

Muslim Students Allowed To Pray In Maryland High School If Grades Are Good

A Maryland public school has drawn attention for its attempt to accommodate Muslim students' religious needs.

Parkdale High School in Prince George?s County, Md., has begun to allow a small group of high-achieving Muslim students out of class for about eight minutes each day to pray together on campus, reports the Washington Post.

In order to qualify for the privilege, students must get parental permission and good grades, according to Parkdale Principal Cheryl J. Logan.

The First Amendment protects the separation of church and state, but it guarantees students are allowed to practice their faith, The Tennessean reported in 2012.

Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, told The Tennessean that while schools may restrict how and where students choose to exercise their religious rights, a school may not stop students from doing so.

"Public schools cannot prevent students from expressing religious faith while on school property," she said.

The Department of Education agrees:

It has long been established that schools have the discretion to dismiss students to off-premises religious instruction, provided that schools do not encourage or discourage participation in such instruction or penalize students for attending or not attending. Similarly, schools may excuse students from class to remove a significant burden on their religious exercise, where doing so would not impose material burdens on other students.

Still, the attempts of some American schools to accommodate the prayer needs of Muslim students has been met with resistance from parents of other faiths.

Last year a Green Bay, Wis., school district was criticized for allowing Muslim students, many of them recent immigrants, to use empty classrooms to pray during breaks, according to The Christian Post. And the mere possibility that some Muslim students would be getting similar accommodations in a district in Pennsylvania was enough to draw protest from parents, according to The Patriot-News.

In 2007, a San Diego, Calif., elementary stopped allowing its Muslim students a special prayer break after the effort drew international headlines, according to 10News.

Parkdale High's new measure has drawn the ire of conservative bloggers, like the virulently anti-Islamic Pamela Geller, whose Atlas Shrugs blog referred to the Maryland district's initiative as "Mosqueing the Public School." However, Parkdale's Principal Logan didn't bend to the inflammatory rhetoric.

Logan also said that when the school's plan was implemented, she initially heard grumbling from some Christian teachers, who reportedly told students Parkdale was "a Christian school.? But apparently the issues have since been resolved.

?I?ve been real happy with how we?ve been able to deal with it without it becoming an issue,? Logan said, according to the Washington Post.

Injecting botox into stomach does not promote weight loss

Bethesda, MD (Jan. 28, 2013) Despite conflicting data in support of the practice, some overweight Americans looking for an easy fix have turned to gastric botox injections to help them lose weight. This month in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association, researchers from the Mayo Clinic publish a definitive study finding that Botox doesn't promote weight loss.

Injecting botulinum toxin A (BTA), or Botox, into the stomach had been believed to delay emptying of the stomach, increase feelings of fullness and reduce body weight. Researchers enrolled 60 obese patients in a 24-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, concealed allocation trial to compare the effects of BTA to placebo. They found that the injection slowed movement of food through the stomach but it did not cause weight loss.

"On the basis of our findings, I would not recommend gastric Botox injections to people who want to lose weight. There are some risks with this treatment and we found that there was no benefit in terms of body weight loss," said Mark Topazian, lead author of the study and professor of medicine in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

A previous study had indicated that Botox was a promising weight loss option. This study invalidates those findings because it is larger, used ultrasound to ensure injections were properly placed, and limited bias by ensuring that neither physicians nor patients knew who received Botox and who received placebo injections.

"Unless future studies show different results I'd advise patients to seek other means of achieving weight loss," said Dr. Topazian.

Japan plans to broadcast 2014 World Cup in 4K

While NHK's Super Hi-Vision 8K TV is still some distance away from becoming an everyday presence in our living rooms, we may get the next best thing soon. Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications expects to broadcast the 2014 World Cup next July in 4K, using free capacity on its communications satellites rather than the usual delivery methods -- the bandwidth required is reportedly too much for conventional sources. The 4K airing is still coming two years earlier than originally planned, however, and should eventually spread to broadcast satellites and terrestrial networks. The fortunate ones who can tune in to the ultra-sharp futebol will need an exorbitantly-priced 4K TV set to watch, but it's safe to presume that they'll have some of the best viewing parties around.

Solar System (for iPad)

Solar System ($13.99), an iPad app, lets you explore the Sun and its retinue of planets.

It has the same excellence in design and content as two Editors' Choice iPad apps made by Touch Press, The Elements: A 3D Exploration and Pyramids 3D, including similar virtual reality rotatable 3D figures. Its image galleries, featuring pictures from NASA missions and elsewhere as well as artist's impressions, are exquisite. The app is a good choice for students up to high school students and interested laymen alike.

Solar System in a Nutshell
The home screen displays a grid of icons; across the top are the Sun, Earth, and planets, as well as the asteroid belt, Kuiper Belt, and Oort cloud. Displayed under each world are icons for its moons (if any) or other relevant objects; Ceres, Vesta, and other asteroids appear under Asteroid Belt, Comets under Oort Cloud; and Pluto, Eris, and other icy so-called dwarf planets under Kuiper Belt.

At the screen's upper left is an icon labeled Solar System, which takes you to a series of slides describing our solar system, or evolving knowledge about it, and how it compares with other recently discovered planetary systems. The Orrery button at upper right takes you to a digital depiction of our solar system, showing the planets, as well as orbits that you can toggle on and off. A slider at the bottom lets you speed up or slow down their motion. An information button shows a physical orrery, a brass, clockwork miniature model of the solar system; they were popular starting in the 18th century.

Pressing on Song takes you to a slideshow of space images set to an instrumental version of Biophilia, by Bj?rk. The About button describes the app, a collaboration between Touch Press and British publisher Faber and Faber, with the imagery processed by Planetary Vision Ltd., and includes a Credits button.

Exploring the Planets
Each orb accessible through a home-page icon has at least one page devoted to it, and some (the Moon and Mars) have as many as nine pages, each page covering an important aspect of that world. In addition to Wegener's jigsaw and the introductory page, Earth pages include one called Water World; one called Earth's aura, about the atmosphere; Living planet details the development and nature of life on our planet; Earth's umbrella, about the protective effect of greenhouse gases and the Earth's magnetic field; and lastly, How do we know the Earth is round?

As planets and most of the moons depicted are spheres (more or less), the 3D functionality consists of the ability to rotate these worlds to see their entire surface area (or cloud belts, as the case may be.) Irregularly shaped asteroids look more dramatic when rotating. My favorite 3D depiction is one of our own world, titled Wegener's Jigsaw, after Alfred Wegener, who came up with the theory of continental drift after noticing that the coastlines of Africa and South America.? Swiping on the image of the globe takes you through an animation showing 400 million years of shifting land masses.

The opening page for each planet or moon contains the rotatable image, plus a brief description of that world. Pressing the Orrery button now takes you to the object. For instance, clicking on the orrery from the page for Io takes you to Jupiter, where its four largest moons, including Io, are in motion; their speed can be controlled through the slider. Clicking on Done takes you back to the Io opening page.

The spinning red crystal icon at the page's lower left is WolframAlpha; clicking on it takes you to information on the planet or moon from that search engine, including physical properties, orbit, and current position in the sky.

To the right of the WolframAlpha button is an icon that takes you to an image gallery. Solar System includes a gallery for each planet, moon, or class of objects (asteroid belt, Kuiper belt, Oort Cloud, etc.). Clicking on a gallery thumbnail gives you a full-screen version of the image. Nearly all of the photos and illustrations are exquisite. The app's author, Marcus Chown, quips in the About section, "No expense has been spared in the production of Solar System. The location filming budget alone has approached a trillion dollars. That, of course, is NASA's expenditure, not ours!" Gallery images include ones from some non-NASA missions as well.

The rest of the icons and buttons at the bottom of the screen are concerned with navigation. A line of tiny images, starting with the Sun and including each planet and its moons in increasing distance from the Sun as you move to the right, lets you navigate to these object's pages, a tiny Space Shuttle pointer sits under the icon for the orb whose page you're currently viewing. To the right of this line of icons, Home and Back buttons are bracketed by left and right arrows. The arrows proved to be the easiest way to navigate within a section (for instance, among the 7 pages for Jupiter).

A row of white dots at the top of the screen?such as you find on the iPad's home screen with its grid of apps?shows you where you are within the section. It can be used to navigate: tap one of the dots, and you're at another page. It is awkward, though: While I was using the app while seated in a moving subway, navigating with the dots was hit or miss, mostly miss. The arrow buttons are much better, though I would have liked to have been able to advance through the pages by swiping them as well. (The presence of touch-sensitive 3D illustrations on part of the page may preclude that.)

Alternate App
Solar Walk (for iPad) is a similar app. Its 3D graphics aren't as dazzling as Solar System and its navigation isn't as intuitive, but it adds a few videos, a search function for geographic and planetary features, and the ability to email or tweet screen shots, or post them to Facebook, and sells at a much lower price. I can recommend both of these apps.

As an interactive e-book, Solar System provides a useful and engaging overview of the Sun, planets, moons, and other solar system bodies. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the 3D rotatable spheres are skillfully designed. The text provides a solid if somewhat succinct introduction to each world, covering important aspects of the object. It doesn't include any outside links, but should nonetheless inspire students to do their own research.

UFC: Rampage Jackson falls to Glover Teixeira

CHICAGO (AP) ? In possibly Rampage Jackson's last UFC fight, the former champion was visibly exhausted.

It also was easy to see that Glover Teixeira was well on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at the United Center.

Jackson, the 34-year-old former light heavyweight champion was taken down in all three rounds, but Teixeira (20-2) couldn't finish him. Jackson (32-11) got back to his feet every time. Late in the second round, Jackson tried to shrug off Teixeira's punches, but fatigue appeared to be setting in.

"I really wanted to win that fight," Jackson said. "I kind of wish I fought smart and didn't get hit so much, but I always said I would rather lose a good fight than win a boring one and the fans are telling me that was an exciting fight. So I guess I'm sad but not so sad. I fought like Rampage tonight."

The fight was scored 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Jackson, who fought his last fight under his current UFC contract, has been critical of the UFC and how he perceives the organization treats its fighters. He insists the fight was his last in the UFC, but plans on continuing his MMA career.

"He just walked out right now and screamed, 'You are going to miss me,'" White said. "I said, 'I miss you already buddy.' ... Rampage's biggest problem is that he doesn't always train. He doesn't always stay in shape. If he took this sport 100 percent, hardcore, serious, God knows what that guy would be able to accomplish, but he doesn't."

Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title in the main event, unanimously outpointing John Dodson.

Dodson, fighting at 125 pounds, landed left hands twice in the second round, sending Johnson to the ground. In the third round, Johnson had a takedown and landed a knee to get back in the fight. Johnson was warned after two illegal knees, a low blow in the first round and an illegal knee in the fourth round.

Johnson (17-2-1) started taking control late in fourth land, landing a series of knees to Dodson's head and a series of punches as Dodson (15-6) tired. It continued in the fifth and final round, as Dodson couldn't defend repeated knees to his head.

Johnson struggled in the first two rounds.

"I got dazed a little bit, but I am in good shape," Johnson said. "It is going to happen. You are going to get hit."

In a lightweight bout, Anthony Pettis (14-2) landed a left kick to Donald Cerrone's body and followed with a left jab in the second round, knocking Cerrone (19-5) to the ground and winning his third straight fight.

"Shutting that guy up was the biggest thing for me," Pettis said. "Now I never need to hear about that guy again. He's done. He got beat in one round. Goodbye."

Pettis put himself in a position for the lightweight UFC title and asked the question to UFC President Dana White.

"I am not scared to fight anybody. I want the champ ASAP," Pettis said. "Dana White what do I have to do for this title fight?"

Pettis came off an 11-month layoff after shoulder surgery.

In another main card fight, 30-year-old Chicago native Ricardo Lamas (13-2) dropped a series of elbows and punches on 24-year-old Erik Koch (13-2) before the featherweight bout was stopped by referee John McCarthy. Lamas had Koch pinned to the ground and went to work on Koch's bloodied face.

World's most powerful engine blazes path for space launch system advanced propulsion

Jan. 26, 2013 ? To help develop the nation's future heavy lift rocket, NASA resurrected the world's most powerful rocket engine ever flown -- the mighty F-1 that powered the Saturn V rocket-- and test fired its gas generator today at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

NASA engineers ran the gas generator at the Marshall Center's Test Stand 116. The test is part of a series that will push the gas generator to limits beyond prior Apollo-era tests. Modern instruments on the test stand measured performance and combustion properties to allow engineers a starting point for creating a new, more affordable, advanced propulsion system.

"Our young engineers are getting their hands dirty by working with one of NASA's most famous engines," said Tom Williams, Director of the Propulsion Systems Department in Marshall Engineering Directorate. "These tests are only the beginning. As SLS research activities progress, these young NASA engineers will continue work with our industry partners to test and evaluate the benefits of using a powerful propulsion system fueled by liquid oxygen and rocket grade kerosene, a propellant we haven't tested with in some time."

The gas generator tested at Marshall today is a key F-1 rocket component that burns liquid oxygen and kerosene and is the part of the engine responsible for supplying power to drive the giant turbopump. The gas generator is often one of the first pieces designed on a new engine because it is a key part for determining the engine's size, which is a factor in the engine's power and ability to lift heavy payloads and send them to space.

A video of the test is available at: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html?media_id=158899711

NASA's Space Launch System will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit. The initial 77-ton (70-metric-ton) SLS configuration will use two 5-segment solid rocket boosters similar to the boosters that helped power the space shuttle to orbit. The evolved 143-ton (130-metric-ton) SLS vehicle will require an advanced booster with more thrust than any existing U.S. liquid- or solid-fueled boosters. Last year, NASA awarded three contracts aimed at improving the affordability, reliability and performance of the rocket's advanced booster, including one focused on the F-1 engine.

"It's important that our workforce get hands on experience on systems like the F-1 gas generator as it helps make them smart buyers, and good stewards of what we procure from industry," said Chris Crumbly, manager of the SLS Advanced Development Office at the Marshall Center. "As we look to the future advanced boosters for SLS we are eager to see what our partners in industry can provide as far as a more powerful and affordable solution."

LONDON (AP) ? Cycling's governing body agreed Friday to introduce a "truth and reconciliation" commission with the World Anti-Doping Agency, effectively undermining the independent panel investigating the Lance Armstrong scandal.

The UCI established an independent three-person panel to investigate accusations that its leaders covered up suspicious doping tests given by Armstrong during his 1999-2005 run of Tour de France victories and improperly accepted donations from him totaling $125,000.

The panel had demanded earlier Friday that it must be allowed to implement a form of amnesty program that allowed riders and officials to come forward with information on doping without fear of retribution, citing a struggle to persuade witnesses to speak openly.

UCI President Pat McQuaid said the federation would work with WADA to develop the amnesty commission. The UCI said it would update the independent panel on the talks before a second public hearing next Thursday.

"The truth and reconciliation process is the best way that we can examine the culture of doping in cycling in the past, and can clear the air so that cycling can move forward," McQuaid said after the panel's initial hearing.

McQuaid said he will hold talks with WADA President John Fahey this weekend about how the truth and reconciliation process would operate.

The independent panel also wants to broaden its investigation into Armstrong's role as the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on the U.S. Postal Service team, which was exposed in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report last year. Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life, admitted to doping in an interview last week with Oprah Winfrey.

But the UCI rebuffed attempts by the panel to widen the inquiry on Friday, insisting it would be too costly to fund wide-scale investigations.

McQuaid also said since the independent commission was established, "several of our stakeholders have said they won't take part in it. Not just USADA and WADA but others, national federations.

"We feel that because a lot of the allegations which are in the USADA report are made by riders, that those riders, if they come forward to the truth and reconciliation commission, can make those allegations again and the UCI can respond to those allegations within that process," McQuaid said.

McQuaid first revealed he was considering such an amnesty program to The Associated Press in September, but said Friday the plans were only finalized in recent days.

"WADA have indicated that they would share costs with the UCI," McQuaid said Friday. "The WADA code is being reviewed and an amnesty is under discussion within that review. But we're just bringing that aspect forward."

McQuaid said that delaying the hearing was not designed to help its own re-election prospects in September, insisting: "I have nothing to worry about."

"There has been a culture of doping in cycling," he said. "But we hope through this truth and reconciliation commission which we are going to put in place, once it has done its work, we have drawn a line in the sand finally ? and for the last time drawn a line in the sand ? and our sport can move on and be the great sport around the world it should be."

Effectively, the UCI is asking the panel it established to suspend itself. It had been due to hold full hearings in April and report by June.

British judge Philip Otton, who heads the panel, accused the UCI of trying to use the delay in the truth and reconciliation process as "an excuse to kick the USADA allegations into the long grass."

"We're not trying to kill this inquiry. We set you up," UCI lawyer Ian Mill responded later in a heated exchange that led to him being told by Otton: "Please do not raise your voice."

"We are not the bad guys here," Mill said. "We have a finite amount of money available to us ... we are not like a football body."

But the panel fears that the process is being intentionally stalled, complaining about a lack of full disclosure by the UCI.

"It just amazes me that we have had absolutely no documents whatsoever," former British Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson said to the UCI's lawyer. "When are we going to get the .... files?"

But Mil said the "entire process has been derailed" because the panel is demanding a truth and reconciliation process of its own and a widening of its role into the wider doping scandal.

"An amnesty is one thing, getting to the bottom and determining how the USPS team operated without detection or sanction in a reasonable timescale ... causes us considerable anxiety," Mill said.

"That truth and reconciliation process is not capable of being done with the timetable and it may or may not be done under the auspices of this inquiry," Mill said. "We can do something which we understand you don't want to do ... a limited inquiry taking place in April."

Pet Therapy relieves student stress | TheNews.org

The Student Government Association hosts Pet Therapy once a month in the Curris Center. Students use Pet Therapy as a way to relieve stress brought on by the semester. || Anna Taylor/The News

As the start of the semester begins to wear away and students become more acclimated to their schedules, the amount of coursework and stress is on the rise. In an effort to diffuse some of the stress, the Student Government Association has brought back a student favorite program: Pet Therapy.

Based on the idea that time spent with animals, particularly animals such as cats and dogs, is calming, Pet Therapy is designed to decrease stress in students as they enjoy time with the animals. Though simplistic in sound, Powell Henderson, volunteer for the Pet Therapy program at the Calloway County Humane Society, said the idea maintains credit within the scientific community, as those who consistently spend time with animals show lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to those who have no animal interaction.

Held monthly in the Curris Center and occasionally in the residential colleges, the program has been a staple on Murray State?s campus for a number of years. Students have consistently participated in the program, enjoying the presence of dogs and puppies on campus.

Kayla Clark, senior from Brandenburg, Ky., said she has enjoyed the dogs being brought to campus as compensation for missing her own pets while living on campus.

?The puppies are the main reason I stop by,? Clark said. ?They?re too cute and it?s great because I never get to see my dogs at home because I live on campus. It almost makes up for it, not quite, but almost.?

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of dogs featured in Pet Therapy are not simply dogs brought from the local animal shelter that are up for adoption. Nearly all of the full-grown animals brought to the Curris Center are in fact trained, tested and certified therapy dogs.

To become certified, the animals take tests to demonstrate discipline and calmness, according to Henderson.

Though animals from the animal shelter may be brought in on occasion, most of the dogs in Pet Therapy are the personal pets of the attendants seen with them. In addition to their training, the therapy dogs are brought to campus rather than animal shelter dogs because of the reassurance that they are trained not to bite or be aggressive, therefore presenting less of an insurance liability for the University.

As the program continues to thrive on Murray State?s campus, many students find themselves looking forward to the occasion, anticipating the program?s next date.

?I can?t wait for Pet Therapy because it really takes your mind off of things, no matter what may be going on,? Clark said.

The Humane Society also occasionally brings therapy cats to local nursing homes, and they also have a miniature horse.

Said Henderson: ?People always tend to

ask why we bring (the animals) in and the answer is always the same: they make people happy.?
