Having enough light during an emergency is crucial, but traditional flashlights just don?t last very long. Revere Supply Co.?s 30-Day Lantern is an efficiency powerhouse. I'm a Jerkie Junkie! Product Review | Simply Filipina

I?ve always loved jerky, sometimes I crave for this on breakfast and snacks. Being a jerky junkie, I thought I?m going to go for sodium-rich jerky all my life. Not until I?ve tried Krave Jerky. This healthy jerky with all its natural seasonings plus flavors that sounds delish! I simply loved it! So what do I have here? Garlic Chili Pepper Beef Jerky which leaves your mouth on fire, not really for children but girls my nieces likes it. Chili Lime Beef Jerky, the flavors come out as soon as I open the pack, Sweet Chipotle Beef Jerky unlike garlic chili, this one?s heat is moderate, and my favorite- Smoky Grilled Teriyaki Pork Jerky which is made from pork and the ingredients are perfectly combined and has a hint of sweetness. Just right texture and smoky and not salty at all! Well, it?s re-sealable after all so you can actually open a few packs all at the same time, so to taste, lol!?
Oh well I can?t wait to get more. So, if you?re a jerky junkie like me, then you?ve got to try Krave! Check them out for a ton of stuff for you to crave! Try the Krave Jerky Sampler?so you know what am talking! Wink!

Scott G. Brooks: A Local Artist with an International Reach | Borderstan

From Eliza French. Follow her on Twitter?@elizaenbref; email her at?eliza[AT]borderstan.com.

Scott G. Brooks has been living and working in the DC area since moving here from Flint, Michigan in 1990. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at University of Michigan in 1983, and considers himself ?lucky? to know he wanted to be an artist from an early age. Although he has primarily worked in the world of painting and fine art over the past ten years, he also works as a children?s book illustrator and works in animation, graphic design and drawing.

Although some themes do translate from his work as a children?s book illustrator into his fine art, he says the process for his commercial and artistic work is much different. He uses different materials when creating the two, which puts him in a ?different mindset? for each. His illustrations used to be all watercolor or gouache, but now he creates them using digital programs.

For his paintings, he prefers the more ?flexible? medium of oil paint, which gives the artist a long time to manipulate the paint and also harkens back to the Pre-Raphaelites and Flemish masters he admires. Brooks has recently begun experimenting with Spike Lavender, a non-toxic alternative to turpentine used by the Flemish in the 17th?Century.

Brooks? two divergent interests in high-brow, classical art and low-brow, light-hearted cartoons and animation both contributed to his unique artistic style. As a younger artist, Brooks mostly painted in a more photo-realistic, traditional style. ?It always bugged me when people would say, ?It looks just like a photograph,? ? said Brooks. So, he started to incorporate some distortion and other techniques from animation. The large heads on his figures, for example, are ?very common in comics,? he said, pointing to the well-known Charlie Brown strip as an example.

Brooks? distinctive style has helped him cultivate an audience around the country ? and the world. In 2012 alone, he has exhibited works in New York City, Los Angeles, London and Melbourne. He still frequently exhibits work in DC and is a member of the Mid-City artists. Although he said it would be difficult to make a living if he only sold pieces within the DC Metro area, he says the network of artists here is ?very supportive? of one another. ?DC isn?t necessarily know as an art town,? Brooks remarked, ?but there?s some great people.?

Most of Brooks? friends, however, aren?t visual artists. He doesn?t go to ?all of the big art parties,? but he does love to entertain and stay connected to the larger arts community. Many of his friends are performers and musicians, and he recently collaborated with one friend on a music video. Tom Goss?s ?Make Believe,? released Monday, October 29, features one-shot animation by Brooks.

Brooks said he has a ?hard time settling in? to just one thing and bounces around from one type of art to the next. ?This tendency to have a hand in multiple projects and incorporate a broad range of cultural references into his art has developed his distinctive style, but it also keeps propelling him forward in his artistic development.

Now, he says, ?things are quiet.? He just opened a group show at Last Rites gallery in New York, finished his first music video collaboration, has plans to expand his illustration work and is just beginning work on a comic with a writer in Australia. His paintings, with their twisting distortion, dark satire and vivid backgrounds, capture the same tireless energy and broad range of interests that continue to inspire Brooks? career.

HRs by Cabrera, Young leave Series Game 4 tied 3-3

DETROIT (AP) ? Delmon Young homered off Matt Cain in the sixth inning, pulling Detroit into a 3-3 tie with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night in World Series Game 4 as the Tigers tried to avoid getting swept.

AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera and San Francisco's Buster Posey also homered, marking the first time both reigning batting champions went deep in the same Series game.

San Francisco's Brandon Belt hit an RBI triple off the right-field wall in the second following a ground-rule double by Hunter Pence. But on a night when the wind was gusting to right field at up to 25 mph, Cabrera put Detroit ahead for the first time in the Series with a wild-blown, two-run drive in the third.

Cabrera's drive, on an 86 mph breaking ball, sailed over Pence who thought he would catch it but ran out of room in front of the right-field wall on the cool, blustery night. It drove in Austin Jackson, who had walked with one out, and ended Detroit's 20-inning scoreless streak.

San Francisco, trying to finish off its second title in three years, had not trailed since losing Game 4 of the NL championship series, when it fell into a 3-1 series deficit against St. Louis.

With a light rain falling, Marco Scutaro reached on a chopper to third leading off the sixth and, one out later, Max Scherzer hung an 82 mph breaking ball. Posey drove it down the left-field line, where it stayed a few feet fair and landed a couple of rows over the wall for a 3-2 lead.

That advantage didn't last long. Young sent a no-doubt drive into the right-field stands in the bottom half, setting off cheers among the crowd of 42,152, with many fans waving white rally towels.

Andy Dirks followed with a single and Jhonny Peralta hit a drive that Gregor Blanco caught against the wall in left.

After watching Barry Zito, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong each allow one run or none in the first three games, Cain gave up three runs and five hits in the first six innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Scherzer, pitching on nine days' rest, gave up three runs and six hits, struck out eight and walked none.

San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval was 1 for 3 to leave his Series average at .571 (8 for 14) and he also made a nimble play to throw out Quintin Berry on a bunt to third.

Detroit's Prince Fielder was hitless in his first three at-bats, dropping to 1 for 13 in the World Series (.083) and 1 for 25 (.040) against right-handers in the postseason.

Of the 23 previous teams to take 3-0 leads, 20 swept the Series and three won in five games.

Detroit has lost six straight postseason games. If the Tigers forced a Game 5, ace Justin Verlander would start Monday night and Zito would take the mound for San Francisco. Zito led the Giants over Verlander 8-3 in the opener.

On a 44-degree night, fans bundled up at Comerica Park and some players wore caps with earflaps during batting practice.

Detroit scratched catcher Alex Avila, playing with a sore right arm since he was hit by a foul tip in the opener, and replaced him with Gerald Laird. Infante moved up to eighth in the batting order.

San Francisco started Ryan Theriot at designated hitter instead of Hector Sanchez.

In debate, Romney reiterates Russia is 'geopolitical foe' of US

The GOP presidential candidate's comments about Russia, which he has repeated several times this year, are likely to irk the Kremlin, but are not apt to change US-Russian relations.

When he has accused Russia of being a "geopolitical foe" in the past, Moscow reacted with confusion and irritation, but little expectation of a change in US-Russian relations.

Mr. Romney first called Russia "our No. 1 geopolitical foe" during the Republican primaries in March, soon after an open mic caught President Barack Obama asking Russia's then-President Dmitry Medvedev to dial back their objections to US missile defense plans until after the November elections, when "I'll have more flexibility."

Although ostensibly a political attack against Mr. Obama, Romney's words caused puzzled concern in Moscow, the Monitor's Fred Weir reported.

A poll carried out by the independent, Moscow-based Levada Center earlier this month found that 42 percent of Russians think relations with the US are either "friendly," "good neighborly," or "normal and peaceful," while 47 percent think they are "cool" or "tense," and just 4 percent said they are "hostile."

"I can't see Romney's remarks as anything but an emotional outburst," says Gennady Gudkov, deputy chair of the State Duma's security committee. "That just doesn't correspond to the actual state of relations between our countries at all. Not only is Russia not a country that's hostile to the US, we are actually allies in many geopolitical issues. Russians may sometimes verbally abuse America, but we tend to keep our money over there, both privately and in the form of our national currency reserves, which are held largely in US dollars?. ?In fact, Russia is far more interested in our relations with the US than the Americans are in their ties with Russia." ...

"Regarding ideological clich?s, every time this or that side uses phrases like 'enemy No. 1,' this always alarms me, this smells of Hollywood and certain times [of the past]," Medvedev said. "I would recommend all US presidential candidates ... do two things. First, when phrasing their position, one needs to use one's head, one's good reason, which would not do harm to a presidential candidate."

When Romney repeated his criticism of Russia during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in August ? he said that "Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and [Vladimir Putin, who was sworn in as Russia's president in May,] will see a little less flexibility and more backbone" ? it again spurred a negative response from Moscow, Weir reported.

Researchers engineer cartilage from pluripotent stem cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A team of Duke Medicine researchers has engineered cartilage from induced pluripotent stem cells that were successfully grown and sorted for use in tissue repair and studies into cartilage injury and osteoarthritis. The finding is reported online Oct. 29, 2012, in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and suggests that induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, may be a viable source of patient-specific articular cartilage tissue.

"This technique of creating induced pluripotent stem cells -- an achievement honored with this year's Nobel Prize in medicine for Shimya Yamanaka of Kyoto University -- is a way to take adult stem cells and convert them so they have the properties of embryonic stem cells," said Farshid Guilak, PhD, Laszlo Ormandy Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke and senior author of the study.

"Adult stems cells are limited in what they can do, and embryonic stem cells have ethical issues," Guilak said. "What this research shows in a mouse model is the ability to create an unlimited supply of stem cells that can turn into any type of tissue -- in this case cartilage, which has no ability to regenerate by itself."

Articular cartilage is the shock absorber tissue in joints that makes it possible to walk, climb stairs, jump and perform daily activities without pain. But ordinary wear-and-tear or an injury can diminish its effectiveness and progress to osteoarthritis. Because articular cartilage has a poor capacity for repair, damage and osteoarthritis are leading causes of impairment in older people and often requires joint replacement.

In their study, the Duke researchers, led by Brian O. Diekman, PhD, a post-doctoral associate in orthopaedic surgery, aimed to apply recent technologies that have made iPSCs a promising alternative to other tissue engineering techniques, which use adult stem cells derived from the bone marrow or fat tissue.

One challenge the researchers sought to overcome was developing a uniformly differentiated population of chondrocytes, cells that produce collagen and maintain cartilage, while culling other types of cells that the powerful iPSCs could form.

To achieve that, the researchers induced chondrocyte differentiation in iPSCs derived from adult mouse fibroblasts by treating cultures with a growth medium. They also tailored the cells to express green fluorescent protein only when the cells successfully became chondrocytes. As the iPSCs differentiated, the chondrocyte cells that glowed with the green fluorescent protein were easily identified and sorted from the undesired cells.

The tailored cells also produced greater amounts of cartilage components, including collagen, and showed the characteristic stiffness of native cartilage, suggesting they would work well repairing cartilage defects in the body.

"This was a multi-step approach, with the initial differentiation, then sorting, and then proceeding to make the tissue," Diekman said. "What this shows is that iPSCs can be used to make high quality cartilage, either for replacement tissue or as a way to study disease and potential treatments."

Diekman and Guilak said the next phase of the research will be to use human iPSCs to test the cartilage-growing technique.

"The advantage of this technique is that we can grow a continuous supply of cartilage in a dish," Guilak said. "In addition to cell-based therapies, iPSC technology can also provide patient-specific cell and tissue models that could be used to screen for drugs to treat osteoarthritis, which right now does not have a cure or an effective therapy to inhibit cartilage loss."

In addition to Guilak and Diekman, study authors include Nicolas Christoforou; Vincent P. Willard; Alex Sun; Johannah Sanchez-Adams; and Kam W. Leong.

The National Institutes of Health (AR50245, AR48852, AG15768, AR48182, Training Grant T32AI007217) and the Arthritis Foundation funded the study.

Full Dragon exits space station, Earth next stop

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? An unmanned Dragon freighter left the International Space Station on Sunday with a stash of precious medical samples and aimed for a Pacific splashdown to end the first official shipment under a billion-dollar contract with NASA.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station used a giant robot arm to release the commercial cargo ship 255 miles up. The California-based SpaceX company will steer its capsule back to Earth via parachutes on Sunday afternoon, a couple hundred miles off the Baja California coast.

The supply ship is bringing back nearly 2,000 pounds of science experiments and old station equipment. Perhaps the most precious cargo is nearly 500 frozen samples of blood and urine collected by station astronauts over the past year.

The Dragon is the only delivery ship capable of returning items, now that NASA's shuttles are retired to museums. Atlantis made the last shuttle haul to and from the station in July 2011.

SpaceX ? more formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? launched the capsule three weeks ago from Cape Canaveral, full of groceries, clothes and other station supplies. Ice cream as well as fresh apples were especially appreciated by the station residents, now back up to a full crew of six.

It's the second Dragon to return from the orbiting lab; the first mission in May was a flight demo. This flight is the first of 12 deliveries under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

"It was nice while she was on board," space station commander Sunita Williams said as the Dragon backed away. "We tamed her, took her home and, literally and figuratively, there's a piece of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

She added to the SpaceX flight controllers in Hawthorne, Calif.: "Congratulations Hawthorne and thank you for her."

The Dragon will be retrieved from the Pacific and loaded onto a 100-foot boat that will haul it to Los Angeles. From there, it will be transported to McGregor, Texas.

The medical samples will be removed as quickly as possible, and turned over to NASA within 48 hours of splashdown, according to SpaceX. Everything else will wait for unloading in McGregor.

A Russian supply ship, meanwhile, is set to blast off this week. It burns up upon descent, however, at mission's end. So do the cargo vessels provided by Europe and Japan.

SpaceX is working to transform its Dragon cargo craft into vessels that American astronauts could fly in another four or five years. Until SpaceX or another U.S. company is able to provide rides, NASA astronauts must rely on Russian rockets to get to and from the space station.

5 Simple Ways to Cut Your Monthly Expenses

Originally Posted at Daily Finance

At the beginning of this year, I decided to pay off my credit card and stick to a serious monthly budget. I was excited to pursue this goal, but I was also nervous. After all, we all want to spend less money, right? But the problem is that finding new ways to save money is usually much harder than finding ways to spend money.

For example, you might decide to pass up a Starbucks latte on your way to work in the morning and then later that evening you indulge in a nice meal at your favorite restaurant. Which can easily make it feel like your efforts to live frugally are not amounting to much. However, I?ve found that the most effective way to cut your spending is to focus on those things that you pay for each month.

If you can reduce the cost of your monthly fixed expenses, you will find your budgeting is much more successful and you?ll have less stress about saving money. With that in mind, here are 5 simple ways to cut your monthly expenses:

1. Reduce your food bill

Easier said than done, right? Well, yes. But the ?food? category is often the one with the most potential for reduction. When I finally took a hard look at my own budget, I realized one of the places where money was leaking out was in my spending on food. I was eating out everyday at lunch because I never took the time to make lunch at home. At the same time, I was having dinner at restaurants almost every weekend, and I was not closely monitoring how much I paid for groceries.

Once you closely track your own spending, you might find that you are in a similar situation ? if so, here?s what to do. First, come up with 3-4 easy lunches you can make at home and plan for how you?ll add time to your daily or weekly routine to prepare these lunches. Some people prefer to do cooking on Sunday and put enough veggies, meat, fruit, etc. into tupperware to last all week. Others like using leftovers from dinner each night to create lunch for the following day. Whatever you prefer, make it your habit and make sure you add enough ingredients to your shopping list to account for this increased cooking.

At the same time, find tricks to make weekend cooking more enjoyable. Whether it?s listening to the radio or doing some ?team cooking? with your significant other, focus on having fun with the entire process of making a meal (rather than feeling the urge to visit a restaurant). You might find you have more fun with a leisurely meal at home than at a restaurant anyway!

2. Cut the car payment

One of the major components of your monthly budget may be your car payment. And there?s not necessarily anything wrong with that ? however, if you are working on cutting expenses (in pursuit of a goal such as: getting out of debt, buying a house, early retirement, etc.) then the car payment might be excessive.

Consider this: if you have $3,000 to $5,000 saved up, or if you can get out of your current auto loan or lease and sell your vehicle for around that much, then you can get a functional car that you can rely on to get you where you need to go, with no monthly payments. Now, you won?t be riding in luxury, and it may take some getting used to. But if you can find an older model car like a Toyota or Honda that tend to be quite durable and reliable, the reward is a big-time savings in your monthly cashflow. Depending on what your current car payment is, you could save up to $400 per month!

3. Take advantage of free entertainment

Do you know how much you pay for all your entertainment in one whole month? Adding up your spending on cable TV, Internet, movie subscriptions like Netflix, concerts or sporting events you attend, happy hours with friends, etc., you may see that your entertainment spending is hundreds of dollars per month.

I won?t tell you to cut off your Internet access, but beyond that, think about how much of this entertainment spending you really need. A Netflix account and premium cable channels may be redundant. Do a quick audit of your costs and decide what you can cut. More importantly, make a commitment to focus on free ways to have fun ? such as picnics in the park or local events that are open to the public like summer concerts sponsored by the city. I?ve often been surprised at how satisfying free entertainment like hosting a board game night with friends can be compared to more costly activities.

4. Don?t pay (much) for a gym membership

It?s always good to exercise, but these days a lot of gyms cost a hundred dollars per month or more. The reality is, for most people, effective exercise can be done at home with light weights and resistance bands. If you?re someone who appreciates exercising in the gym, you can still do it in a frugal way if you find a good deal. There are lots of gyms that advertise discounts online, and one prominent nationwide gym has a very cheap discount available for anyone who shops at Costco (or who has a friend that does). With one of these options, you can still get your workout while reducing your monthly expenses.

5. Remember that fashion is fleeting, but clothes are not

How much do you spend on clothes per month? One quick way to find out is to tally up all your clothing purchases over the last 6 months and then divide the total amount by six. That average will tell you what to expect on a monthly basis. Then think long and hard about whether you really need any new clothes. It?s one thing to replace a pair of worn-out jeans that you?ve worn for years. But it?s another thing to buy a new pair of jeans every couple of months. Remember, you?re not going to save money unless you focus your spending on things you need, not just things you want.

Hopefully these ideas will help you get on your way to reducing your monthly expenses. You can also check out ReadyforZero?s Credit Card Debt and Student Loans resource centers for advice on getting out of debt. I know it?s hard because I?ve spent 2012 trying to follow this same prescription, but I also know that when you start making progress and feeling more confident about your financial position, it?s totally worth it.

New tools developed to better treat ADHD patients in early stages

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Mayo Clinic researchers are presenting new findings on the early treatment of child and adolescent attention deficit hyperactivity disorder this week at the American Academy of Childhood and Adolescent Psychiatry annual meeting in San Francisco. They include a method to get better input from parents and teachers of children who are being diagnosed with ADHD for the first time -- allowing for more effective treatment upon the first consultation. Researchers also showed how a tool can help clinicians better diagnose and treat children who have both ADHD and oppositional defiance disorder.

In the first study, Mayo Clinic researchers required parents and teachers of children coming in for their first ADHD consultation, defined by some combination of problems such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior, consultations to complete extensive background forms and analysis. By offering incentives and stressing the importance of being prepared for the first consultation, clinicians were able to boost parent and teacher compliance from 25 to 90 percent at the Mayo Clinic Child and Adolescent ADHD Clinic. As a result, researchers have been able to better recommend treatment and therapy right off the bat.

"I'd compare treating a child with ADHD for the first time to consulting with someone who has type II diabetes -- we need to measure a diabetic patient's blood sugar level before we can properly treat them," says study lead author Jyoti Bhagia, M.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist. "The same goes for ADHD. The more we know about children in the early stages of treatment, the more quickly we can get them the help they need."

In the second study, Mayo Clinic researchers gave 75 patients with ADHD at the Mayo Clinic Child and Adolescent ADHD Clinic a written, subjective evaluation to test for oppositional defiance disorder, a persistent pattern of tantrums, arguing, and angry or disruptive behavior toward authority figures.

They found that the test was far better able to pick up whether the child had the disorder than an anecdotal physician diagnosis. Of the 75 patients in the study, 27 percent, or less than a third, were diagnosed with oppositional defiance disorder by their providers. After taking the subjective test, 48 percent tested positive for oppositional defiance disorder. That shows the presence of oppositional defiance disorder with ADHD is underdiagnosed and children may not be receiving the behavioral treatment they need.

Children who have both ADHD and oppositional defiance disorder benefit from a combination of medication and behavioral therapy, says Dr. Bhagia.

High-efficiency quantum dot solar cells developed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Research shows newly developed solar powered cells may soon outperform conventional photovoltaic technology. Scientists from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have demonstrated the first solar cell with external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 100 percent for photons with energies in the solar range. (The EQE is the percentage of photons that get converted into electrons within the device.)

The researchers will present their findings at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 -- Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.

While traditional semiconductors only produce one electron from each photon, nanometer-sized crystalline materials such as quantum dots avoid this restriction and are being developed as promising photovoltaic materials. An increase in the efficiency comes from quantum dots harvesting energy that would otherwise be lost as heat in conventional semiconductors. The amount of heat loss is reduced and the resulting energy is funneled into creating more electrical current.

By harnessing the power of a process called multiple exciton generation (MEG), the researchers were able to show that on average, each blue photon absorbed can generate up to 30 percent more current than conventional technology allows. MEG works by efficiently splitting and using a greater portion of the energy in the higher-energy photons. The researchers demonstrated an EQE value of 114 percent for 3.5 eV photons, proving the feasibility of this concept in a working device.

Joseph Luther, a senior scientist at NREL, believes MEG technology is the right direction. "Since current solar cell technology is still too expensive to completely compete with non-renewable energy sources, this technology employing MEG demonstrates that the way in which scientists and engineers think about converting solar photons to electricity is constantly changing," Luther said. "There may be a chance to dramatically increase the efficiency of a module, which could result in solar panels that are much cheaper than non-renewable energy sources."

Movie Review: 'Fun Size' ? CBS Philly

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Early on, the film?s setting, Cleveland, is described as the ?mistake by the lake.? So let?s dub this dreadful comedy a ?mistake in every take.?

The huge difference between fun size and fun is vividly demonstrated by Fun Size, a bargain-basement teen comedy that?s short on size and fun.

Wait, did I say teen comedy?? Yes, because that?s what it turns out to be.

But although the script is aimed at teens and is consumed with particular teenage concerns (even though? it lives at the far edge of its PG-13 border where R beckons and renders much of its humor inappropriate), it reaches out to children and is being sold as a family film.

1c2bd1 Movie Review: Fun Size

(1? stars out of 4)

It?s not.

The PG-13 is for ?crude and suggestive material, partying, and language.? And yet it?s being marketed as a Halloween-night comedy:? of course tweens and young children will want to see it.

That?s why so much of the profanity and sexual references, however mild, seem inappropriate for the target audience. The disconnect between content and marketing is gaping.

It?s set throughout Halloween night, as teens party and youngsters go out trick-or-treating.

Victoria Justice plays Wren, a sardonic high school senior who narrates and is looking forward to going off to college ?- NYU, her recently deceased father?s alma mater, is where she?s headed ? so that she can get away from her dysfunctional family.

When she?s invited to a Halloween party by Aaron, the guy she has a crush on (Thomas McDonell), she is understandably upset when her mother (Chelsea Handler) tells her to take her little brother, Albert (Jackson Nicoll), trick-or-treating while she goes out with her much younger boyfriend.

Wren goes to the party instead, where she promptly loses track of Albert, who disappears among the many costumed trick-or-treaters out on the street.

So she borrows a car and heads out along with her best friend, April (Jane Levy), as well as two guys, Peng (Osric Chau) and Roosevelt (Thomas Mann), the latter a debate captain who has a huge crush on her, to find her younger brother.

What this movie is doing on theatre screens is mystifying: it plays like an episode of a middling television series that doesn?t even exist.

Josh Schwartz, the debuting director who created such TV series as ?Gossip Girl? and ?The O.C.,? also served as one of the producers, working from a script by Max Werner that?s strained and unfunny from the get-go and burdened with a severe case of the cutes.

If there is a moment of recognizable reality in character or circumstance, I missed it.? To take one glaring example among many: when a child goes missing, just about everyone reacts as if it were a misplaced utensil.

Some teens may relate to the situation, but most will recognize that something about the whole enterprise is just out of whack.

So we?ll wear a costume of 1? stars out of 4 for the misadventure-in-babysitting misfire, Fun Size, a wrongheaded trick and a tasteless treat.

Georges St-Pierre agrees with ?boring? criticism

Heading into his UFC 154 bout with Carlos Condit, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is riding a nine-fight win streak. Dating back to UFC 69, when he lost the belt to Matt Serra, GSP has not lost. However, his last win by a stoppage was in January of 2009, when he TKOed B.J. Penn. Since then, he won five-round decisions over Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields.

The run of decisions has brought about criticism from fans who call the longtime champ "boring." As he has rehabbed from a knee injury over the past year, GSP has heard the criticism, and guess what? He agrees.

"I agree with the criticism," St-Pierre told The New York Post. "I want to do better. I want to give more entertainment to the fans."

Do you think you'll see a more exciting GSP at UFC 154? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Romney: Election about 'your family'

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has begun telling Americans the Nov. 6 election comes down to which candidate would be better for their families. He's trying to personalize the choice voters are making between him and President Barack Obama.

Campaigning in Nevada, Romney said the election isn't just about big ideas but also is about "your family."

He described tough situations facing seniors, families with children and the unemployed. At one point, Romney asked audience members to raise their hands to say if they experienced situations he had just outlined.

The remarks were a departure from Romney's typical campaign speeches, which usually have a broader focus.

After the speech, Romney headed for his second campaign stop of the day, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Indiana picked as Big Ten favorite in basketball

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) ? Tom Crean didn't really understand what he was getting into when he took the Indiana job four years ago.

Now, the mess is gone. Just look at the Hoosiers.

They are the top team in the Big Ten and Cody Zeller is the Preseason Player of the Year, according to a vote by conference media, results that were hardly surprising given their jump last season.

All the Hoosiers did was orchestrate a 15 1/2 -game turnaround that matched the biggest in Big Ten history, going 27-9 on the way to the Sweet 16.

It's fair to say they've come a long way since Crean took over for Kelvin Sampson in the wake of the phone-call scandal that gutted the program.

"We had hit rock bottom," he said Thursday at Big Ten media day. "We had all kinds of issues that were inside the program. You don't take the job at Indiana thinking you're going to deal with what we were dealing with, but we did. And we weren't going to leave. That wasn't an option."

Crean said he actually had a chance to leave after his first season at Indiana, a 6-25 nightmare in 2008-09 that included a 1-17 conference record, and he would have earned what he was making in his previous job at Marquette. It took him "about 10 seconds" to say no.

Now, the Hoosiers are back on top in a conference that appears to be loaded.

Michigan and Ohio State were picked to finish second and third after sharing the regular-season title with Michigan State last season, and the way Crean sees it, those three are the teams to beat until someone unseats them.

The Hoosiers have as good a chance as any, with the 6-foot-11 Zeller back after averaging 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman. He was a unanimous pick for the preseason all-conference team, with Michigan's Trey Burke, Ohio State's Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas, and Penn State's Tim Frazier also making it.

"The target of being an Indiana Hoosier has never changed," Crean said. "Indiana is synonymous throughout the country for being known for a lot of things in basketball. It was always a big, big game. It was always a big deal when you were playing Indiana or Indiana was coming to town. And I think that hasn't changed. Will it grow some? Maybe. But I think the bottom line is a year ago, when there really weren't those outside voices talking in a totally positive light where the team was at, that didn't phase them. They continued to work."

The Hoosiers are facing no easy task.

Michigan is right there. So is Ohio State, even if its best player (Jared Sullinger) and one of its all-time leading scorers (William Buford) are gone after a Final Four run.

The Buckeyes still have three starters back. And Michigan State coach Tom Izzo likes his team's chances even though Draymond Green is gone.

"We have a chance to put together a pretty good team, and unfortunately it's in a tough conference this year and that's going to make a difference," Izzo said.

Strength of the conference was a big theme on Thursday, only this year it seemed like something more than coach-speak. There seems to be some weight to it.

"We're going to have to back it up," said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan, whose team is coming off a 26-win season and Sweet 16 run. "We're going to have to play well, that's for sure. There are certain teams now in our league that have that 'X' mark on their back, but that's good. I think that's good, that quality competition, that interest, the outside interest of people saying, "Well, we think this team is pretty good." This team is pretty good. That's OK, that's great for the league."

For Indiana, it's been a tough climb back toward the top. The Hoosiers won just 10 games in Crean's second season and 12 in his third, before turning it around a year ago. Zeller's arrival was the extra kick the program needed.

"It's pretty crazy to think about how far we've come," senior Jordan Hulls said. "It speaks volumes of how Coach Crean and his staff have really instilled their lives into getting Indiana basketball back to where people are used to seeing it. Being part of the losing seasons and then now, last year having a pretty good year and then expectations for this year, it's pretty cool to be a part of that."

Which organic foods are worth the higher price?

When a health conscious individual visits the supermarket, he or she is often tempted by the array of products displayed in the organic section. However, in these tough economic times, the question becomes: ?Are they worth the higher price?? A new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) attempts to answer that question. It was published online on October 22 in the journal Pediatrics.

According to the Organic Trade Association, the US market for organic foods has grown from $3.5 billion in 1996 to $28.6 billion in 2010. Organic products are now sold in specialty stores and conventional supermarkets. Organic products contain numerous marketing claims and terms, only some of which are standardized and regulated. Therefore, the AAP?s Committee on Nutrition, and Council on Environmental Health assessed organic products to determine whether they were actually beneficial to one?s health.

The report notes that in terms of health advantages, organic diets have been convincingly demonstrated to expose consumers to fewer pesticides associated with human disease. Organic farming has been demonstrated to have less environmental impact than conventional approaches. However, current evidence does not support any meaningful nutritional benefits or deficits from eating organic compared with conventionally grown foods, and there are no well-powered human studies that directly demonstrate health benefits or disease protection as a result of consuming an organic diet. Studies also have not demonstrated any detrimental or disease-promoting effects from an organic diet. Organic foods regularly command a significant price premium; however, well-designed farming studies demonstrate that costs can be competitive and yields comparable to those of conventional farming techniques. The report suggested that pediatricians should incorporate this evidence when discussing the health and environmental impact of organic foods and organic farming while continuing to encourage all patients and their families to attain optimal nutrition and dietary variety consistent with the US Department of Agriculture?s MyPlate recommendations.

The clinical report reviewed the health and environmental issues related to organic food production and consumption. It defined the term ?organic,? reviewed organic food-labeling standards, describes organic and conventional farming practices, and explores the cost and environmental implications of organic production techniques. It examined the evidence available on nutritional quality and production contaminants in conventionally produced and organic foods. Finally, the report provided guidance for pediatricians to assist them in advising their patients regarding organic and conventionally produced food choices.

The report noted that feeding children organic fruits and vegetables reduces the amount of potentially harmful chemicals and also may help prevent immunity to antibiotics. Thus, children benefit from consuming organic produce because it is not grown with synthetic pesticides. The report cited several studies linking pesticide exposure to health issues such as memory problems and cancer in adult farm workers and an increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. They also cited a study that reported that switching to organic produce for just five days dramatically reduced the levels of pesticide residue in the urine of children who usually ate conventional produce.

In regard to vitamin and mineral content, the investigators found little difference in the vitamin and mineral content between organic and conventional foods; however, some organic produce does have more vitamin C and phosphorus. They also reported that organic milk does not appear to have significant health benefits for children. Many parents buy organic milk because of concerns about growth hormone and estrogen often given to conventionally raised cows. However, the researchers explain that growth hormone given to cows does not affect humans. They noted that consumption of milk from estrogen-treated cows appears to be safe for children; in addition, they explained that they found little difference in the sex-hormone concentrations in organic and conventional milk. They recommended that a child?s exposure could be reduced by switching to skim milk because the more fat content in milk, whether organic or not, the higher the concentration of estradiol.

In regard to meat, the investigators focused on the risk of exposure to antibiotics from eating conventionally-raised animals. They suggested that eating organic meat could reduce the risk of disease related to antibiotic resistant bacteria. They cited one study that reported that teenage girls who eat more red meat from animals treated with hormones have a great risk of breast cancer later in life. Thus, they recommended that further research should be conducted regarding the potential health effects of low-level estrogen exposure from food.

The report stressed that the best diet for children includes generous amounts of fruits and vegetables. In addition, it noted that there is no direct evidence that an organic diet will prevent disease or convey health benefits. The investigators recommended that parents should select organic versions of produce that is known to have significant pesticide residue when conventionally grown (i.e., apples and celery); however, they should select the less expensive, non-organic products that are known to be low in pesticide (i.e., onions and pineapples).
