Hours before Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher executed his girlfriend and then killed himself - cops roused him from his sleep and cut him a break.
A video recorded from the dashboard of a Kansas City police cruiser shows three officers talking to Belcher, 25.
They tapped on the driver?s side window and found him sleeping in his black Bentley. Police said someone called 911 reporting a suspicious person near an apartment building just after 3 a.m.
?You know you?ve got a lot riding on this,? one officer told Belcher. ?You know you?ve got a lot to lose.?
The former Long Island high school football star told police he was waiting for his gal pal, Brittni Glass.
The cops searched Belcher?s car before allowing him to go into the woman?s apartment, but they didn?t issue him a citation.
Police officials said Belcher had been drinking during a night out partying. Cops asked him where he was going and determined that he had no plans to drive.
?We?re trying to cut you a break here,? one of the officers said.
?I really appreciate it,? Belcher replied before going into the building to meet Glass.
Belcher later went to the suburban home he shared with Kasandra Perkins, 22, mother of his 3-month-old daughter, Zoey. The couple argued bitterly before Belcher shot Perkins nine times in front of his mother, Cheryl Shepherd, 54, who had come to help out with the little girl.
Seconds after pulling the trigger, he knelt down and planted a kiss on Perkins? forehead in the master bedroom. Belcher apologized to the dead woman, kissed his baby girl, and drove about 5 miles to the team?s training facility at Arrowhead Stadium around 8 a.m.
Belcher thanked his general manager, Scott Pioli, and coach, Romeo Crennel, for everything they?d done for him. The gridiron star turned away and then pulled the trigger.
A second dashboard video shows police racing to the practice facility - just before the suicide.
?I?ve got a sighting from afar, it looks like they're in a negotiation,? a cop said, as he approached the parking lot.
The cop requested a rifle. Other responding officers were asked to cut off their sirens.
?I?m at the south side. I?m at the main entrance, trying to sneak up on foot,? he added before the recording stopped.
Police officials have said Belcher was out of the cops? view when he shot himself.
About 200 mourners gathered on Thursday for a memorial service at a Blue Ridge, Texas church. Perkins wanted to be a teacher, according to her obituary.
?To put it simply, Kasi loved life,? said the victim?s great-uncle, Ted Downing, who delivered the eulogy.
Hundreds also attended a funeral service and burial on Saturday outside of Austin where her father lives.
